Penguin Island

Sunday 24th February 2008-
Penguin Island was our destination for today. After a nice picnic on the mainland we set off with Elise's kayak, and snorkelling gear and waded across to the island (takes approx 20 minutes and the water doesn't get any higher than shoulder height). When we arrived at the island we first went snorkelling (I saw Gar fish & Derek saw some huge purple fish!). After that we had a short walk and saw a nesting colony of pelicans on a hillside and on the beach in a cave we saw a seal resting! Coming home Derek, Drew & Elise swam/waded & I took the kayak. Halfway back I saw a large dark shape swimming under the water in front of the kayak, was hugely relieved when it went past & came up for air as I realized at this point it was a dolphin (not a shark!!). Ended our day with fish n'chips at Rockingham, hurrah!

Busy day...

Today Dez & I got up & out early to try & find a settee for our family room. This has been on our mile long 'list of things to do' for months & I'm so fed up of sitting on an uncomfortable futon (and the cushion slides down alllll the time!). Anyway we ended up at Scarborough Beach so we had to go & get a nice coffee whilst we were there (to help us with this important decision!). After browsing a while we found something we liked & have it on order. We just have to be patient now as delivery time is estimated at 12 weeks :-(
After this we came home & spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning inside & outside both of the cars...they desperately needed it.
We could have spent the evening in a couple of ways as I had been invited to a 40th & we also had been invited to a 'bad taste t-shirt & pizza nite' but we decided on a quiet night playing scrabble with Drew & Elise (I think we ARE getting old!).

Happy 46th Birthday Myra!
Had lunch at Myra's with a few of her friends...not sure if she'd be happy about me giving her age away so don't tell anyone!!

Sunday 17th February 2008-
We had a drive down to Point Peron today (slightly further south from Rockingham).
Found a nice sheltered beach and more or less had it to our selves the whole time we were there! Elise played on her kayak (I had a go too...kills your arms!) & the kids had fun making 'sand people'!

Friday 15th February 2008-
RIP, 'Ratty' the rat! Not actually sure how old he was (Elise was given three rats when her friend moved to Rockingham over a year ago) but rats only live 2-3 years.

Good news! Elise has been one of the few selected to join the music programme at the school & play the clarinet...following in her brothers foot steps!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DREW, 14 TODAY!

It was an early start for Drew as usual on his birthday as he leaves the house at 7am every morning for school. Bearing this in mind we got up that bit earlier so he could open his cards & presents. School wasn't so bad either as the Swimming Carnival was conveniently scheduled on his birthday, taking up most of the hot (37 deg) day!!
After school Drew's birthday treat was a nice meal at Sebastian's Italian Cafe, where he enjoyed Garlic Bread, Veal Parmigana, washed down with a Caramel milkshake!!
At home we lit candles on a Dutch Apple Pie (as requested by Drew) & sang the usual 'Happy Birthday'!

At last...a kayak!

Elise finally got her kayak yesterday after saving up for quite a while (a BIG thank you to everyone who contributed to this). She even got to choose the colour! Today we launched the SS 'Typhoon' at Rockingham & Elise's best friend Natasha joined Drew & Elise for all the fun!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ELISE, 11 TODAY!

Unfortunately having your birthday on a school day isn't so hot! But we treat Elise to a nice smorgasbord tea at 'Miss Mauds', where she was greated with balloons, a big bag of sweets to take home & serenaded 'Happy Birthday'!
I was pretty glad to not be cooking tea tonight as it was my first day working as an Educational Assistant @ Kenwick Primary School. I'm just going to be there once a week at the moment, with another day in the pipeline & relief work.

February frenzy...

Saturday 3rd February 2008-
Went to a birthday BBQ today as a good friend of ours (& hairdresser), Catherine celebrated her 40th today. It was a stinking hot day so of course had to drink plenty!!!

1st February 2008-
Was having a pretty normal day. lah de dah de dah... just in the middle of cooking the tea when Drew comes running into the kitchen pulling his t-shirt off, panicking as he'd seen something run across his shoulder & had felt as though he'd been bitten by something. Derek then comes home to chaos, as we realize Drew has just been bitten by a red-back spider!! So off Drew & I went to A & E as by this time Drew was complaining that his shoulder was ceasing up & he was REALLY scared. Two & a half hours later after seeing a doctor we had busted a few myths about red-back spiders. Apparently very few people have a severe reaction to the venom & most people after a dose of anti-histamine & an ice pack are none the worse for their experience! Luckily for
Drew (& a relief for us) he came home fine & immediately rang his friend to tell him about his brush with death!!! Have attached a pic of the culprit after we captured it in a water bottle!
